Obituary for Eleanor Baumann

Eleanor (Murphy) Baumann, 72, of Marshfield, Massachusetts, formerly of Cranford, New Jersey, passed away on May 3, 2019 surrounded by her loving family after her brave struggle with breast cancer.

Eleanor is preceded in death by her son, Matthew, and her parents Margaret and Joseph Murphy. She is survived by her devoted husband, Richard; her two sets of twins: Meredith (Robert Aylward) of Milton, MA, and Stephanie (Thomas Laur) of Milton, MA, Michael (Kristy) of Pearl River, NY, and Christine (Christopher Day) of Denver, CO; her beloved grandchildren William, Sloane, Brendan, Riley, Colin, Matthew, and Michael; her sister, Margaret Cooney of Kenner, LA; brother, Charles Murphy (Marla) of Carmel, CA, and her nieces and nephews.

Growing up in New Orleans, Louisiana, Eleanor was inspired to seek social justice in the world around her and did so in each chapter of her life. After college, Eleanor served as a missionary with the Dominican Order of the Preachers in New Orleans, Louisiana, and worked with the people in the Altiplano region of Peru and children of the Mississippi Delta. After she married, Eleanor moved north, raising her children in Cranford, NJ. She taught religion and theology at Girls Catholic and Roselle Catholic, both in Roselle, NJ, for almost 20 years. A progressive thinker and creative teacher, Eleanor shaped her curriculum in ways that would best reach her teenage students. Weaving contemporary movies and books into her lessons and introducing them to mindfulness and meditation, Eleanor showed her classes how to bring spirituality into their daily lives. Countless students respected her as a teacher and valued her as an advisor and friend. In her retirement years, her most cherished role became “Grandma”, caring for and spending time with her seven grandchildren.

When they retired, Eleanor and Rich moved to Marshfield on the South Shore of Boston, realizing her dream to live in the town where she and her family vacationed throughout her life. It was there she was able to bring together family and friends, carry on traditions, and create memories that will live on in all who had the pleasure of being hosted by Eleanor.

Eleanor lived her life in faith, and her signature smile, style, charm, warmth, and idealism will be missed by all who knew her.

Friends are invited to visit Thursday, May 9th, from 4 till 8 PM.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM Friday, May 10th, at St. Michael's Church, 40 Alden St., Cranford. Interment will be in St. Gertrude Cemetery 53 Inman Ave., Colonia.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made in her memory to Dana-Farber Cancer Institute
